The match between Khelif and Carini lasted 46 seconds, and the two opponents exchanged only a few punches before Carini walked away and abandoned the fight.

Algeriaโ€™s Imane Khelif, a boxer who was disqualified from the 2023 Womenโ€™s World Boxing Championships for failing to meet unspecified gender eligibility criteria, won a womenโ€™s opening Olympics match in Paris on Aug. 1 against Italyโ€™s Angela Carini.

The match between Khelif and Carini lasted a mere 46 seconds, and the two opponents exchanged only a few punches before Carini walked away and abandoned the fight.

A tearful Cariniโ€”who is about two inches shorter than her opponentโ€”said she ended the match because she โ€œfelt a strong painโ€ in her nose after the opening punches.

โ€œYou all saw my nose that started bleeding. I didnโ€™t lose tonight, I just surrendered with maturity. I am a mature woman, the ring is my life,โ€ Carini said in a post-match interview.

โ€œIโ€™ve always been very instinctive, but when I feel something is not going well, itโ€™s not a surrender but having the maturity to stop.โ€

Carini didnโ€™t shake Khelifโ€™s hand following the conclusion of the match, and she was seen crying in the center of the ring on her knees as she said in Italian, โ€œItโ€™s not fair.โ€

Khelif will face Hungaryโ€™s Luca Anna Hamori of the womenโ€™s 66-kilogram division in the quarterfinals on Aug. 3. Hamori defeated Australiaโ€™s Marissa Williamson in a unanimous points decision 5-0 on Aug. 1.

โ€œFirst, I thank all the Algerian people, after this first victory,โ€ Khelif said after the match concluded. โ€œI hope to achieve a second victory to secure a medal, and then think about the gold medal.โ€

Previous Failure to Meet Eligibility Requirements

However, Khelifโ€™s victory was met with controversy. At last yearโ€™s womenโ€™s boxing world championships in New Delhi, India, the International Boxing Association (IBA) disqualified Khelif and Taiwanโ€™s Lin Yu Tingโ€”a three-time medalistโ€”because they failed to meet eligibility rules that prevent athletes with XY chromosomes from competing in womenโ€™s events.
