Nathaniel Philbrick | The Genius of General George Washington

This third Hillsdaleโ€™s Center for Constructive Alternatives (CCA) lecture 2020 by Nathaniel Philbrick considers the genius of General George Washington.

Xenophon wrote that a successful general โ€œmust be resourceful, active, careful, hardy, and quick-witted; he must be both gentle and brutal, at once straightforward and designing, capable of both caution and surprise, lavish and rapacious, generous and mean, skillful in defense and attack.โ€ This third Hillsdaleโ€™s Center for Constructive Alternatives (CCA), one of the largest college lecture series in America, takes place during the 2019-2020 academic year. These lectures considers the lives and characters of some of Americaโ€™s greatest generals. This particular lecture from Nathaniel Philbrick considers the genius of General George Washington.

About Nathaniel Philbrick

Nathaniel Philbrick is an author and a research fellow at the Nantucket Historical Association. He earned his B.A. from Brown University and his M.A. from Duke University. Mr. Philbrick is the recipient of numerous awards, including the Samuel Eliot Morison Award from the U.S.S. Constitution Museum, the William Bradford Award from the Pilgrim Society, and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the New England Historic Genealogical Society. He is the author of numerous books, including In the Heart of the Seaโ€”which won a National Book Award for nonfiction and was the basis of the 2015 movie of the same nameโ€”The Last Stand: Custer Sitting Bull and the Battle of Little Bighorn, and, most recently, In the Hurricane’s Eye: The Genius of George Washington and the Victory at Yorktown.
