Trump Administration Officials Testify on Jan. 6 Capitol Breach

On Wednesday, May 12, 2021, at 10:00 a.m., Rep. Carolyn B. Maloney, the Chairwoman of the Committee on Oversight and Reform, held a hybrid hearing to examine the events of January 6, 2021, in which people breached the U.S. Capitol during the joint session of Congress convened to count the Electoral College votes of the 2020 presidential election. This hearing focused in particular on the Trump Administration’s preparations in advance of January 6 and response to the breach.

On January 16, 2021, the Oversight Committee joined the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, the House Committee on Homeland Security, and the House Committee on the Judiciary in sending a letter to U.S. Intelligence Community agencies requesting intelligence products and briefings related to the January 6, 2021, attack.

On March 25, 2021, these Committees and the House Committee on Armed Services, Committee on House Administration, and House Appropriations Subcommittees on Defense, Interior, and the Legislative Branch, sent letters to sixteen federal, congressional, and District of Columbia departments and agencies requesting a broad array of documents relating to the January 6 attack.

The hearing also considered the response of federal and local law enforcement agencies to the attack, and the need to establish a bipartisan, “9/11-style” commission, so that Congress and the American people can fully understand the causes and circumstances that led to the January 6, 2021 Capitol breach.
