Bill Gates Left Microsoft Board Before Conclusion of Probe Into Affair With Employee

The Epoch Times

Microsoft board members determined in 2020 that Bill Gates had to step down from the companyโ€™s board while they were investigating an alleged prior relationship the billionaire had with a female Microsoft employee that was deemed inappropriate.

The Wall Street Journal reported, citing people familiar with the subject, that the board members hired a law firm in 2019 to investigate the relationship after an engineer at the company claimed that sheโ€™d had a sexual relationship over several years with Gates.

โ€œMicrosoft received a concern in the latter half of 2019 that Bill Gates sought to initiate an intimate relationship with a company employee in the year 2000,โ€ a Microsoft spokesperson told The Epoch Times in a statement. โ€œA committee of the Board reviewed the concern, aided by an outside law firm, to conduct a thorough investigation. Throughout the investigation, Microsoft provided extensive support to the employee who raised the concern.โ€

Gates resigned on March 13, 2020, before the investigation was finalized, soon after his reelection for the board seat.

โ€œThere was an affair almost 20 years ago which ended amicably,โ€ a spokeswoman for the billionaire told the WSJ, adding that his โ€œdecision to transition off the board was in no way related to this matter. In fact, he had expressed an interest in spending more time on his philanthropy starting several years earlier.โ€

This comes after the billionaire on May 3, 2021 said in a tweet that he and his wife of 27 years, Melinda Gates, are getting divorced.

โ€œAfter a great deal of thought and a lot of work on our relationship, we have made the decision to end our marriage,โ€ a statement from the two said. โ€œOver the last 27 years, we have raised three incredible children and built a foundation that works all over the world to enable all people to lead healthy, productive lives.โ€

They didnโ€™t provide any other details about the split.
