Raising babies can be a dirty business. A typical baby needs 6,000 to 9,000 diaper changes from birth to potty training. It’s also expensive. Disposable diapers, wipes, and trash bags during this period can cost up to $3,000.

But for small business owner Kim Ormsby, diapering babies is also very big business.

After she was laid off from her job at a large telecommunications company, Ormsby looked into using cloth diapers for her second child to save money and because of her concern with the environmental impact of disposable diapers. “I thought I can’t be the only mom trying to do this.”

Using her personal credit card to buy inventory, Ormsby created Montana’s Diaper Store, an online retail site selling cloth diapers and other baby care products from the laundry room of her Bozeman, Montana, home. At first she considered opening a brick-and-mortar store, but decided against it. “I was trying to think of ways to get into the market without getting too committed.”

It was only a few years, and the Montana’s Diaper Store developed into The Natural Baby Company, a retailer, manufacturer, distributor, and parent company to in-house cloth diaper brand, GroVia. Today, The Natural Baby Company and GroVia are helping unite eco-responsibility and function in homes across the globe, all because they offer a simple way to nurture baby, naturally.
