Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei is set to deliver a speech during Friday prayers in Tehran on Friday, January 17, 2020. It’s the first such event for him in 8 years.

Iran has faced increasing tension triggered by the killing of top General Qasem Soleimani in a US drone strike near Baghdad’s airport on January 3, 2020. The assassination was followed by retaliatory attacks from the Iranian side and the unintentional downing of Ukraine International Airlines PS752 flight last Wednesday.

Protests erupted in the Iranian capital in the last few days amidst anger over the handling of the plane crash and for Iran’s blaming of President Trump for the atrocities of the Iranian regime.
