Biden to Deliver Election-Year State of the Union Address

The president will deliver his third State of the Union address at 9 p.m. ET, when he is expected to pitch to voters why deserves a second term.

What to Know About Tonight’s Speech

President Joe Biden will deliver his third State of the Union address before Congressโ€”and millions of viewers watching at homeโ€”at the U.S. Capitol tonight.

The event always carries the promise of political theater. But in a pivotal election year when the president is facing low approval ratings and intensifying scrutiny over his age, tensions will only be that much higher.

The speech is set for 9 p.m. ET and will be broadcast live across all major networks. Viewers can also tune in online to NTDโ€™sย special coverageย starting at 8 p.m.

As the president delivers his remarks, there will be two prominent figures standing behind him. Vice President Kamala Harris, as the next person in the presidential line of succession, will be behind him to his right. On his left will be House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.), who is third in line for the presidency.

The address will be Mr. Johnsonโ€™s first since taking the gavel in October.

Throughout the event, former President Donald Trumpโ€”President Bidenโ€™s top rival for the presidencyโ€”will share his real-time responses via his Truth Social platform.

President Bidenโ€™s first two State of the Union speeches in 2022 and 2023โ€”and his 2021 โ€œAddress to a Joint Session of Congressโ€โ€”all ran just over an hour in length. Itโ€™s not yet known how long his 2024 address will be, though given his track record, it will likely wrap up sometime after 10 p.m.

Sen. Katie Britt (R-Ala.) will then deliver the GOPโ€™s English-language rebuttal while Rep. Monica De La Cruz (R-Texas) will deliver the partyโ€™s Spanish-language response.

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene: ‘State of the Union Is Laken Riley’

“The State of the Union is Laken Riley,” said Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.).

Sporting a Make America Great Again hat and a “Say Her Name Laken Riley” T-shirt, the outspoken Republican representative said the United States is under attack because of President Joe Biden’s “open border policies” as more than 10 million illegal immigrants are “invading our country.”

“There’s two million gotaways, and among them, we know there are terrorists,” she said. “America has a national security crisis because of Joe Biden.

“Joe must go.โ€

Last month, Laken Riley, 22, was found dead after she went jogging near the University of Georgia campus. She was killed, allegedly by a man who illegally crossed the U.S.-Mexico border.

Ahead of the State of the Union address, the House passed legislation mandating the detention of any migrant who has committed burglary or theft. The bill, called the Laken Riley Act, passed 251-170 in the lower chamber. Republicans were joined by 37 Democrats.

โ€œInnocent Americans, from Laken Riley in Georgia to the 14-year-old rape victim of an illegal immigrant in our home state of Louisiana,โ€ said House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.). โ€œTheyโ€™ve all been victimized by those whom the Biden administration has released into our country. He is releasing them into your state.โ€
