At a rally outside the South Loop police station on August 10, 2020, Ariel Atkins, a Black Lives Matters activist, spoke to the crowd after a violent night with more than 100 arrests, and where 13 police officers injured. Property damage was estimated, at the very least, at 60 million dollars.
“I don’t care if somebody decides to loot a Gucci or a Macy’s or a Nike, because that makes sure that person eats. That makes sure that person has clothes . . . That is reparations . . . Anything they wanted to take, they can take it because these businesses have insurance.” ~ Ariel Atkins, Black Lives Matters activist a Chicago rally
The Reverend Jesse Jackson responded with this tweet, “This act of pillaging, robbing & looting in Chicago was humiliating, embarrassing & morally wrong. It must not be associated with our quest for social justice and equality”.
