Blackburn Introduces BROWSER Act on Data Privacy Day

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Senator Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.) re-introduced the Balancing the Rights of Web Surfers Equally and Responsibly (BROWSER) Act on Thursday, Data Privacy Day.

“The invasive overreach of the communication and technology sectors cannot continue,” said Senator Blackburn. “Online users need a tangible way to safeguard their right to privacy without a denial of service. The BROWSER Act will put more power in the hands of users and work towards a culture of digital data privacy.”

This legislation requires communication and technology companies to clearly disclose their privacy policies and provides consumers with the choice to opt-in or opt-out of data collection depending on the sensitivity of the information. Additionally, the BROWSER Act prevents companies from denying service to users who refuse to waive their privacy rights, empowers the Federal Trade Commission to enforce these rules, and ensures a consistent national law regarding online privacy.

Senator Blackburn previously introduced this bill during the 115th and 116th Congress.
