Since coming to power in 1999, President Hugo Chávez has persistently employed threatening rhetoric against the United States, which was interpreted by some as a brave defiance and by others as a hollow mute.
On several occasions, taking advantage of all the scenarios available to him, Chávez attacked the capitalist system, calling it savage, and calling the American way of life a threat to civilization.
However, such words ended up reflecting the deep contradictions of his Bolivarian revolution.

Casto Ocando is an investigative journalist with a career of more than 20 years in Hispanic media in the United States and Venezuela, where he is from. He has covered issues of public corruption, drug trafficking, money laundering and immigration. As an investigative journalism consultant, Ocando has worked with the Investigative Unit of Univision, the largest Hispanic network in the United States. Desde su llegada al poder en 1999, el presidente Hugo Chávez empleó de manera persistente una retórica amenazante contra Estados Unidos, que fue interpretada por algunos como un valiente desafío, y por otros como una sordina hueca.
En diversas ocasiones, aprovechando todos los escenarios a su alcance, Chávez atacó el sistema capitalista tildándolo de salvaje, y calificando el estilo de vida norteamericano como una amenaza a la civilización.
Sin embargo, tales palabras terminaron reflejando las profundas contradicciones de su revolución bolivariana.
A la vista pública quedaron muchas evidencias para mostrar las inconsistencias ideológicas de los chavistas frente al llamado “imperialismo norteamericano”, que se resumía en la popular frase de “critican al imperio, pero cómo les encanta el imperio”.
