Senator Cotton’s Statement on China’s Announced National Security Legislation for Hong Kong

Washington, D.C. – Senator Tom Cotton (R-Arkansas) today released the following statement after China announced it would impose new national security legislation on Hong Kong:

Chairman Xi and his Communist thugs once again show their disregard for Hong Kong’s promised autonomy and freedom. There must be consequences for Beijing’s tyrannical actions against the people of Hong Kong.

Video on top of page: China’s annual parliamentary meeting has been officially opened in Beijing and it’s expected that national security legislation for Hong Kong will be discussed during the seven-day session according to the Chinese state news agency Xinhua. Reports say that the National People’s Congress (NPC) is to discuss drafting a decision on “Establishing and Improving the Legal System and Enforcement Mechanisms for Hong Kong to Safeguard National Security” at a plenary session on Friday. Earlier, local media reported that the law could be enacted through Annex III of Hong Kong’s basic law.

Video Below: Among the proposed policies the regime unveiled is a national security law in Hong Kong that would extend the mainland’s laws into Hong Kong—a move that would go against the “one country, two systems” agreement. U.S. Senators are working to introduce a bipartisan bill, however, that would sanction Chinese officials if they go through with it. Crossroads with JOSHUA PHILIPP
