Democratic Washington, D.C., Mayor Muriel Bowser on Thursday requested the indefinite activation of the district’s National Guard forces to handle the mass arrival of migrants from border states.

Amid a growing migration crisis, Republican leaders in border states have begun loading migrants who have crossed the border onto buses and sending them to the nation’s capital.

v and expressed concerns that the district’s homeless relief resources would quickly be overwhelmed.

More than 4,000 migrants have already entered the district in this manner, according to NBC4 reporter Mark Segraves, who noted that the DC armory would act as a processing center amid the influx.

Bowser assured residents that constituents would not bear the brunt of the expenses related to handling incoming migrants earlier this month. “Local taxpayers are not picking up the tab and should not pick up the tab,” she said.

The move to bus migrants, led by Texas Republican Gov. Greg Abbot and Arizona Republican Gov. Doug Ducey, comes as the nation battles with record numbers of migrants crossing the border. Several border counties have pronounced the situation an “invasion,” and demanded state or federal action to stem the tide of migrants.
