As the sun faded low in the skies of Washington D.C. on Wednesday evening, Kevin McCarthy’s quest to become the next speaker of the House remained uncertain. McCarthy has lost six ballot votes, and those opposing him and, or voting present, has grown in number with each round of voting.

Why does McCarthy not have the votes?

Representative Matt Gaetz (R-FL) is one of the primary voices leading the resistance against McCarthy’s reign.
